Nilutamide - Nilutamide drug information

Brand Name - Nilandron, Anandron

Indroduction and Uses of Nilutamide

Nilutamide is used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Nilutamide is a microcrystalline, white to practically white powder with a molecular weight of 317.25. Nilutamide blocks the action of androgens of adrenal and testicular origin which stimulate the growth of normal and malignant prostatic tissue. Nilutamide also inhibits the consequences of the initial rise of testosterone plasma levels observed after treatment with LHRH agonists.
Each NILANDRON tablet contains 50 mg nilutamide. Other ingredients in NILANDRON tablets are corn starch, lactose, providone, docusate sodium, magnesium stearate, and talc.

You should begin taking nilutamide the day of or on the day after the surgical removal of your testicles. After about 30 days of treatment, your doctor will probably decrease your dose. The length of treatment depends on the types of drugs you are taking and how well your body responds to nilutamide.

Possible Side effects of Nilutamide

  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Nipple discharge
  • Poor appetite
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • alcohol intolerance
  • impotence
  • visual changes
  • dizziness
  • difficulty sleeping
  • sweating
  • loss of body hair

Dosage and dosing of Nilutamide

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Nilutamide

  • Delayed adaptation to darkness after exposure to bright light often improves with maintenance doses and resolves when treatment is discontinued.
  • Nilutamide can cause a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol causing flushing, headache, nausea and/or dizziness.
  • Hot flushes are common in patients who have been surgically castrated and may be the result of the surgery rather than the nilutamide.
  • Nilutamide is contraindicated in women and children.
  • Cases of interstitial lung disease have been reported with the use of nilutamide. If dyspnea or worsening of dyspnea occurs, treatment should be interrupted and a chest x ray performed immediately. If interstitial pneumopathy is diagnosed, nilutamide must be discontinued and corticosteroid treatment may be considered.
  • Patients administered nilutamide should be warned against consuming alcohol because of a possible disulfiram-like reaction.
  • Be very careful while driving, especially when you drive into or out of tunnels. Nilutamide can temporarily change the way your eyes react to light.

Storage conditions of Nilutamide

Keep nitulamide in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Cancer Tip

A cancer diagnosis affects not only a man with the disease but the people around him, especially family members and friends. Everyone wishes to be supportive, helpful, and cope with the cancer diagnosis as well as possible but that's not always easy.

Health Tip

Drinking plenty of fluids will help to ease a sore throat and clear congestion of the nasal passages. Lying propped up on several pillows will help to control nighttime coughing.
