Lung cancer
Lung Cancer Symptom, Treatment, Picture, Stage, Types, Signs, Causes, Survival rate of asbestos mesothelioma lung cancerLung Cancer is the most common cancer in males, and the second most frequent in females (after breast cancer). It is also the most preventable cancer because over 90% is directly related to cigarette smoking. Treatment of Lung CancerFor practical purposes lung cancer can be divided into small-cell cancer , comprising about 20%, and non-small-cell cancer , comprising the other 80% of cases. Patients with non-small-cell lung cancer should be considered for surgery although only a quarter will be operable and only a quarter of those will be cured. Radiotherapy may provide useful palliation in inoperable patients and very good symptom relief in metastatic disease. Chemotherapy can palliate 25% of patients with platinum-containing regimens. Small cell lung cancerA small proportion of small-cell lung cancer patients with limited disease will be cured. In patients with extensive disease, chemotherapy can still provide good symptomatic relief. In small-cell lung cancer the disease has almost always disseminated by the time of diagnosis and surgery is thus inappropriate. Compared to non-small-cell lung cancer, this tumour is very chemosensitive and radiosensitive and approximately three-quarters of patients will respond to combination chemotherapy (e.g. etoposide and cisplatin) with good relief of symptoms and modest prolongation of life. Non small cell lung cancerAs in non-small-cell lung cancer, radiotherapy can provide very useful palliative relief and may be used to treat the brain prophylactically in patients potentially cured of their systemic disease.
