Follicular lymphoma cancerThis is often regarded as the paradigm for low-grade lymphomas. Repeated remissions can usually be achieved with relatively simple treatment, such as with the alkylating agent, chlorambucil. The response rates both at presentation, and at first and second recurrence, are approximately 75%, with a median survival of 9 years. Most patients are able to lead a normal life for most of this time. However, the disease remains incurable with conventional therapy. Several promising new approaches such as fludarabine-containing regimens, myeloablative therapy with peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) support, and immunologically mediated treatments, such as antibodies to B cell antigens (e.g. CD20) or cellular immunotherapy, are therefore being investigated.
