Exemestane Cancer Drug

Exemestane (Brand name is Aromasin) is a man-made drug that is used in the treatment of advanced breast cancer in women who have had their menopause (change of life). It is a type of hormonal therapy. Hormonal therapies change the production or action of particular hormones. Hormones are substances produced naturally by the body. They act as chemical messengers and help to control the activity of cells and organs.

Many breast cancer tumors grow in response to estrogen. Exemestane interferes with the production of estrogen in the body. As a result, the amount of estrogen that the tumor is exposed to is reduced, limiting the growth of the tumor. This medicine is meant to be used only by women who have already stopped menstruating.
