Cyclophosphamide - cyclophosphamide side effects

Indroduction and Uses of Cyclophosphamide

Cyclophosphamide is chemotherapy that is given as a treatment for many types of cancer. It is most commonly used to treat lymphomas; cancers of the ovary, breast and bladder and a type of leukaemia known as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Cyclophosphamide stops the growth of cancer cells, causing them to die.

Possible Side effects of Cyclophosphamide

Each person's reaction to chemotherapy is unique. Some people have very few side effects, while others may experience more. The side effects described in this information will not affect everyone who is given cyclophosphamide, and may be different if you are having more than one chemotherapy drug.

  • Anaemia
  • Hair loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sores in mouth or on lips
  • Nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea
  • Changes to the lungs
  • Irritation of the bladder lining

Dosage and dosing of Cyclophosphamide

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Cyclophosphamide

  • Cyclophosphamide can cause bleeding in your bladder. This is prevented by receiving extra fluid intravenously and drinking extra liquids. Your nurse or doctor will give you specific instructions.
  • Cyclophosphamide may be prescribed for conditions other than cancer. The drug dosage will then be much lower and therefore these side effects will probably not occur.
  • Cyclophosphamide can lower the platelet count. This can increase your risk of bleeding. DO NOT take any aspirin or aspirin-containing medicines. Report unusual bruising or bleeding such as nosebleeds, bleeding gums when you brush your teeth, or black, tarry stools.
  • Your ability to become pregnant or father a child may be affected by taking this drug. It is important to discuss fertility with your doctor before starting treatment.

Storage conditions of Cyclophosphamide

Keep nitulamide in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Cancer Tip

The mechanisms by which physical activity may prevent cancer are not clear. Exercise can help reduce obesity, which is related to the cause of several cancers. It can also change the body's hormone levels, which might also have a favorable effect.
