Cidofovir - Cidofovir Drug Infromation

Indroduction and Uses of Cidofovir

Cidofovir is an anti-viral drug that is being used experimentally to treat RRP. Cidofovir is absorbed by the host cell, which converts into an agent that kills cells which have HPV in it. It is essentially not absorbed by non HPV cells. This is called a pro-drug, which converts into an active drug. The selectivity is quite remarkable, such that, there is three orders of magnitude more absorption in papilloma cells vs. non disease cells.

Cidofovir is used to treat the symptoms of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection of the eyes (CMV retinitis) in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Cidofovir will not cure this eye infection, but it may help to keep the symptoms from becoming worse.

Possible Side effects of Cidofovir

Medicines like cidofovir can sometimes cause serious side effects such as blood problems and kidney problems; these are described below. Cidofovir has also been found to cause cancer in animals, and there is a chance it could cause cancer in humans as well. Discuss these possible side effects with your doctor. Some common side effects include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Decreased urination
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Headache
  • loss of strength

Dosage and dosing of Cidofovir

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Cidofovir

  • Cidofovir can cause nausea and vomiting. Ask your doctor or nurse to give you medicines to prevent this or lessen it.
  • Potential side effects from probenecid include fever, rash, headache, and chills. Your doctor may give you medicines to prevent these effects. Talk with your doctor about this.
  • To get the best results, cidofovir must be given for the full time of treatment. Also, this medicine works best when there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep the amount constant, cidofovir must be given on a regular schedule.
  • The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of cidofovir. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems

Storage conditions of Cidofovir

Keep nitulamide in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
