Cefixime - Drug Information

Indroduction and Uses of Cefixime

Cefixime stops bacteria from making their cell wall, so the bacteria die. Cefixime is used to treat gram-negative bacteria, especially those causing infections of the urinary tract. It is also used for certain streptococcal infections and the flu (influenza virus) related to bronchitis. They work by killing bacteria or preventing their growth.

Cefixime is given by mouth once or twice a day (morning and night) with or without food. Take the pill with a large glass of water, and at the same time each day for 5 to 14 days as directed.

Possible Side effects of Cefixime

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

  • Hardening of vein used for giving the drug
  • Vaginal itching
  • Headache
  • Sleepiness
  • Vaginal candidiasis
  • Trouble in breathing
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • Decreased red blood cell count
  • Prolonged bleeding time
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Seizures
  • Diarrhea (watery and severe, which may also be bloody)
  • Allergic reaction with fever

Dosage and dosing of Cefixime

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Cefixime

  • Use of antibiotics can change the normal organisms of your body. Women are at risk of getting fungal infections. Tell your doctor or nurse right away if you get vaginal itching or discharge.
  • Stop the drug and call your doctor or nurse right away if you develop a rash, fever, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of face or lips. This can be a serious reaction and needs to be treated right away.
  • The drug dose must be reduced if you have kidney problem or colitis.

Storage conditions of Cefixime

Keep Cefixime in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Cancer Tip

A cancer diagnosis affects not only a man with the disease but the people around him, especially family members and friends. Everyone wishes to be supportive, helpful, and cope with the cancer diagnosis as well as possible but that's not always easy.

Health Tip

The red area in this brain scan shows a pool of blood (a cerebral haemorrhage), which occurs when an artery supplying the brain ruptures and blood seeps out into the surrounding tissue.
