Indroduction and Uses of Buserelin Acetate

Buserelin acetate belongs to the general group of drugs known as hormones or hormone antagonists. It is used to treat advanced prostate and breast cancers. Buserelin is a synthetic analog of natural gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH/LHRH). The effects of buserelin on follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) release are 20 to 170 times greater than those of LHRH. Buserelin is a man-made drug which is used in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer, when it has spread to other parts of the body or come back after initial treatment. It is a type of hormonal therapy.

Possible Side effects of Buserelin Acetate

The following side effects are symptoms of a flareup of your condition that may occur during the first few days of treatment. After a few days, these symptoms should lessen. However, they may require medical attention. Check with your doctor if any of the following side effects occur or get worse:

• Bone pain;  numbness or tingling of hands or feet;  trouble in urinating;  weakness in legs 

Dosage and dosing of Buserelin Acetate

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Buserelin Acetate

• tell your doctor if you are trying to become pregnant, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. This drug may cause birth defects if either the male or female is taking it at the time of conception or during pregnancy. Men and women who are taking this drug need to use some kind of birth control. However, do not use oral contraceptives ("the pill") without checking with your doctor.
• tell your doctor if you have any of the following medical problems: chickenpox or exposure to chickenpox, gout, heart disease, congestive heart failure, shingles, kidney stones, liver disease, or other forms of cancer.
• tell your doctor if you are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, including vitamins and herbals.
• Never take more than the prescribed dose. If you suspect that you or someone else has taken an overdose of buserelin contact your doctor or go to the accident and emergency department of your local hospital at once . Always take the container with you, if possible, even if it is empty.

Storage conditions of Buserelin Acetate

Keep nitulamide in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
