Indroduction and Uses of Bicalutamide

Bicalutamide is used in combination with another medication, a gonadotrophin hormone releasing factor, to treat advanced prostate cancer. Bicalutamide is a man-made drug that is used in the treatment of prostate cancer. It is a type of hormonal therapy. Hormonal therapies interfere with the production or action of particular hormones in the body. Hormones are substances produced naturally in the body. They act as chemical messengers and help to control the activity of cells and organs.

Possible Side effects of Bicalutamide

• hot flashes
• breast swelling, pain, or tenderness
• loss of sexual desire
• impotence
• diarrhea
• headache

Dosage and dosing of Bicalutamide

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Bicalutamide

• Bicalutamide may interact with warfarin (Coumadin). Therefore, the dose of Coumadin may need to be adjusted.
• The drinking of alcohol (in small amounts) does not appear to affect the safety or usefulness of bicalutamide.
• Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are taking warfarin (Coumadin). Bicalutamide may interact with warfarin, and bleeding could result. Your doctor will want to monitor your warfarin therapy.
• Bicalutamide can cause harm to a developing fetus; therefore, it should not be administered to pregnant women or women attempting to become pregnant.
• Stop taking bicalutamide and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives).
• Other drugs such as warfarin (Coumadin®) may interact with bicalutamide. Tell your doctor if you are taking this or any other drugs as you may need extra blood tests or your dose may need to be changed. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new drugs.

Storage conditions of Bicalutamide

Keep nitulamide in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
