Indroduction and Uses of Bexarotene

Bexarotene (beks-AIR-oh-teen) is a drug that is used to treat certain types of skin lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system). It is a capsule that you take by mouth. For the topical treatment of cutaneous manifestations of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma in patients who are refractory to at least one prior systemic therapy. The exact way bexarotene works is unknown, but it is believed to inhibit the growth of tumor cells.

Bexarotene belongs to the group of medicines known as Cytotoxic agents.

Possible Side effects of Bexarotene

• Bloating or swelling of face, hands, lower legs and/or feet;  chills, fever, or general feeling of discomfort or illness;  decreased urination;  lack or loss of strength;  rapid or unusual weight gain;  skin rash, blisters, redness, or irritation;  sticky or tacky sensation;  thickened, scaly skin ;  tingling or "pins and needles" sensation ;  sore throat;  swollen, painful or tender lymph glands in neck, armpit, or groin;  unusual bruising;  unusual tiredness or weakness.

Dosage and dosing of Bexarotene

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Bexarotene

• Tell your doctor if you have ever had an unusual or allergic reaction to other retinoid (vitamin A) preparations before taking bexarotene.
• Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or artificial ultraviolet light (e.g. sunlamps). Bexarotene may increase the sensitivity of your skin to sunlight. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when exposure to the sun is unavoidable.
• Swallow each capsule whole. Do not chew them, dissolve them in liquid, or allow them to dissolve in your mouth.
• Store bexarotene at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
• he presence of other medical problems may affect the use of bexarotene. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems.
• Before taking bexarotene make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

Storage conditions of Bexarotene

Keep nitulamide in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
