Bevacizumab

Indroduction and Uses of Bevacizumab

FDA approves Avastin (bevacizumab) as a first-line treatment for patients with colorectal cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

Bevacizumab is a monoclonal antibody that works by attaching to and stopping vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from starting the growth of new blood vessels. Bevacizumab works by blocking angiogenesis - the formation and growth of new blood vessels - by targeting a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In addition to colon cancer, bevacizumab is now under study in several other diseases including renal cell cancer, prostate cancer, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and many others.

Dosage and dosing of Bevacizumab

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Bevacizumab

  • tell your doctor if you are trying to become pregnant, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. This drug may cause birth defects if either the male or female is taking it at the time of conception or during pregnancy. Men and women who are taking this drug need to use some kind of birth control. However, do not use oral contraceptives ("the pill") without checking with your doctor.
  • ell your doctor if you are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, including vitamins and herbals.

Storage conditions of Bevacizumab

Keep nitulamide in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Cancer Tip

One of the problems with radiation therapy for malignant pleural mesothelioma is that the cancer is usually widespread, requiring a large area to be radiated.

Health Tip

Air-filled cavities as sinuses are found in the skull bones around the nose and eyes. The mucus-secreting membrane that lines them can become blocked due to infection.
