Azacitidine

Indroduction and Uses of Azacitidine

The FDA announced on May 20, 2004, the approval of Vidaza injection, the first effective treatment for a rare and difficult-to-treat bone marrow disease. Azacitidine is a cancer (antineoplastic) medication. Azacitidine interferes with the growth of cancer cells and slows their growth and spread in the body.

Vidaza (azacitidine for injectable suspension) is for the treatment of Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS). Vidaza™ (azacitidine for injectable suspension) contains azacitidine, which is a pyrimidine nucleoside analog of cytidine. Azacitidine is 4-amino-1-β-D-ribofuranosyl-s-triazin-2(1H)-one.

Possible Side effects of Azacitidine

  • breathing
  • closing of the throat
  • swelling of the lips, tongue, or face
  • decreased bone marrow function and blood problems
  • tissue or vein reactions near the site of administration
  • blood in the urine
  • little or no urine production
  • severe nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • difficulty in breathing

Dosage and dosing of Azacitidine

The doses of these medicines will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of these medicines. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Warning and Precautions of Azacitidine

  • Azacitidine can lower the activity of your immune system making you susceptible to infections. Avoid contact with people who have colds, the flu, or other contagious illnesses and do not receive vaccines that contain live strains of a virus (e.g., live oral polio vaccine) during treatment with azacitidine. In addition, avoid contact with individuals who have recently been vaccinated with a live vaccine. There is a chance that the virus can be passed on to you.

Storage conditions of Azacitidine

Keep nitulamide in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

In case of emergency/overdose

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Cancer Tip

A diagnosis of cancer is usually a critical event in a person's life because it carries with it the threat of premature death, pain and disability. Today, however, many cancers can be cured or palliated for extended periods of time if initial treatment involves the appropriate therapy.
